INSTANTLY Dmitry freezes, hands tightly gripped ‘pon the strap of his satchel as he turns to face the officer. Hesitant smirk, he plays along, just as he always does. No matter the scenario, Dmitry knows he can always r u n (he’d been doing so his whole life). The rat knew how to avoid attention when need be, though this one always managed to sneak up on him every once in a while.
“Just going to get my daily ration of bread.”Lie number one. “Nothing out of the ordinary.” Sure Dima, sure.
gleb knew the moment he spotted him. they had never been on the best terms, there was no doubt about that. but one simple thing they had in common was anya. and at the very least, they could attempt to be civil. well, that was certainly something gleb could do. “you almost sounded sincere this time.” maybe not.
Eyes widen, hand playfully resting ‘pon his chest. “Of course I’m sincere. Gleb, come on FRIEND, we were waiting for you.” Always so d r a m a t i c. A smile with no feeling, he nods towards the drink table ( oh, how he could use one ) —— “Anyways, what’s your choice of poison ??”
Of course —— Anya always had to invite h i m . Dmitry told himself it was out out PITY ( any other reason cause heart to stir, &¬ in a good way / jealousy’s main victim despite how LITTLE he says to care ). A stiff nod, smirk tight. “Yeah man, glad you could come.” He tried, he really did / not. Tone never seemed sincere. @simpleduty // sc.
“do you really think i am that gullible?” irritation bubbles quickly once more, eyes narrowing on anything else besides the unfortunate company he shared. the official was apparently the only one who would take things seriously, who knew that there were certain buttons that shouldn’t be pushed whatsoever. “a few ladies were more than eager to sell you out. and, besides, it’s only fun and games until someone is murdered for treason.” after this, if anya continued, it would be out of his hands. and he couldn’t say he didn’t try. “whether or not she makes it out that far.”
‘ INNOCENCE ’ widens tawny orbs, hands raising up in surrender. “ Y O U , such a strong official of the law ??Never.” Dmitry quickly loses interest, eyes moving from the individual in front of him to the bustling city before him. He’s already thinking about where to stay the night ( since he clearly has already drawn more than enough attention to himself for the day ). “I’ve heard this speech before, comrade —— no need to waste your breath. Be careful, blah blah blah. We’ll be fine. Besides, aren’t there p l e n t y of over rebels you should be worried about ??”
all he could bring himself to do is scoff, as if gleb would actually believe a word out of his mouth. “sure you are.” eyes would finally break away from the other, instead focusing on the bustling city of leningrad. to imagine, there was a tiny possibility that the so called lost duchess was alive. with every fiber of his being, he was hoping that anya would eventually prove him wrong. this was the last thing russia needed. “i have seen her and she is no anastasia, i will tell you that much. who else could put these thoughts into her head? she doesn’t know anything and i will not be repeating myself.”
Okay, even Dmitry could admit Anya was n o Anastasia … yet. But with a little work && a few more lessons thanks to COUNT Popov well, she’d do. But it was a winning situation for everyone. St. Petersburg would get it’s gossip. Anya would get the family she always wanted && more, && Dmitry ?? He’d be long gone, living in luxury. “The whole city is talking about it comrade. She probably heard it from one of them.” A meager shrug —— he borrowed her words. “What girl doesn’t want to be a princess ??&& if there’s no p r o o f , who’s to say she’s NOT?? Only the Dowager Empress can confirm or deny it.”

could he pull the trigger if he was told? for a moment, he wasn’t sure. he knew that anya didn’t deserve something like that, no matter what he was convinced he knew. the street rat had touched a nerve, but gleb stood tall. shoulders back, hands interlocked behind him. “what do you hope to accomplish with all this, hm?” that somehow he would let him off the hook, after all the trouble he was given? he probably thought he was so clever. “anastasia is dead. i have made that quite clear to anya and you will not continue putting these fantasies into her head, you hear?”
Russet eyes widen with an INNOCENCE that Dmitry had never possessed. “I’m just trying to get to the truth like you ol’ comrade.” Even pretending they had something in common made him shiver, scrunch of his nose in pure distaste. Digits curl around the strap of his bag, back straitening, kicking himself off the wall ( the man relied on instincts, and something told him t’was best NOT to stick around for much longer ). “So YOU’VE been told. But have you seen her with your own eyes ?? Rumors don’t just appear from thin air. &&Anya —— shes SMART. She’ll believe what she wants to, not ‘cause I told her.”
there was a brief second of fear. this street rat knew how to talk himself up, but gleb knew what he saw. he saw something dangerous in anya’s eyes. but he stared down the other anyway, refusing to give in. “if i listened to every rumor i heard, i’d be out of a job. that’s all it is.” there was no threat, he convinced himself. but it was clear that he still cared for anya. “do you know what they will do to her if you two continue your childish fantasies? she would be killed without hesitation.”
The idea of gunfire crossed his mind more than once. The Bolshevik’s liked to make themselves heard, seen. It wouldn’t be the first time someone who argues disappears —— though Dmitry hardly doubted he’d be missed. But the end of a pistol aimed at ANYA ?? Even he wasn’t heartless enough to wish for that. It was why their plan must SUCCEED. Jaw set, he inches in closer, a wise tilt of his chin. “Let me guess, GENERAL”( he says the title like an insult ). “It’d be you pulling the trigger ?? —— If so, shouldn’t you have done it by now ??” Really, he needed to learn when to be quiet.
“i would watch myself, if i were you.” it didn’t sound much like a threat as it was, but it didn’t mean that gleb was any less serious. the presence of the other was draining enough, not to mention irritating. “taking advantage of poor little street sweepers. you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.”
Dmitry n e v e r took too kindly to being told what to do. Despite his current lack of freedom, the con man determined his own fate, thank you very much. Eyes still gleam of mischief, however dark it now turned. “Oh, but I do.” Sure, he had no solid proof —— y e t ( but there was no evidence AGAINST his scheme either ). “You aren’t the least bit afraid that it’s true ?? The end of Leningrad. What a pity.”
